Top Ten of 2012-13 - #5 - Dillon Farrell Captures Landmark Conference Men's Cross Country Title

Dillon Farrell as story #5 of 2012-13

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College continues its countdown of the top 10 honors and moments of the 2012-13 season today with a look at our No. 5 highlight – Sophomore Dillon Farrell wins the 2012 Landmark Conference Men's Cross Country individual championship.

Juniata College hosted the conference championship at the Fort Roberdeau Historic Site in Altoona, Pennsylvania on October 27th. Moravian captured its second straight team title with a score of 39 points while Susquehanna University was the runner-up with 54 points.

Farrell earned Landmark Male Runner of the Year honors after finishing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:02.20, and he also earned All-Conference First Team accolades. He won the race by 43.5 seconds over Nate Alter from the host Eagles.

"Winning Athlete of the Year for Landmark Men's Cross Country was an extremely exciting and honorable experience," Farrell stated. "Growing up with three older brothers who were equally as gifted and athletic as myself, if not more, it is hard not to develop such a competitive nature."

Two weeks later, Farrell finished fourth at the 2012 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional hosted by Dickinson College and earned a spot in the NCAA Division III National Championship meet at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Farrell turned in a time of 25:46.10 on the NCAA Championship course, the fifth-best time in school history, and finished 109th in his first national final on November 17th.

"Dillon was coming off a great freshman track season where he won the ECAC 10k, ran 14:40 in the 5k, and then had a great summer of training, so we had high expectations for him not only at conference but at Regionals and NCAAs as well," Head Coach Jesse Baumann said. "He wound up going into the conference meet in shape, healthy, and confident. We wanted him to hold back a little bit for the first few miles of the race and then attack, but he was feeling pretty strong and took off much earlier than we planned. We were fortunate that he was feeling as strong as he did on that day."

Farrell had an outstanding season overall that included winning the Juniata College Invitational on the same course as the Landmark meet, and he had four top ten finishes during the year. In Moravian's two largest regular season meets, the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University and the Princeton University, Farrell added a pair of top 20 finishes.

Farrell, who improved from 16th in the conference race as a freshman to first last fall, will lead the Greyhounds again this season as the squad looks to win its third consecutive Landmark title.

Number four on our countdown will be announced on Monday, July 29th.
