Moravian Rallies Before Falling to Catholic in Landmark Conference Play

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to knot the score with visiting The Catholic University of America with just under eight minutes to play before falling to the Cardinals, 83-74, in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a three-pointer by junior guard/forward Michael Leonardo, and Moravian led 8-4 after another Leonardo three-pointer two and a half minutes into action. The Cardinals netted the next five points while Moravian had a 13-12 edge after a lay-up by sophomore forward Marquis Ratcliff with 15:19 left in the half
  • Catholic moved back ahead on the next possession and would lead by as many as eight points at 39-31 before heading to the locker room with a 44-37 advantage
  • The Cardinals scored first in the second half while the Hounds countered with an 8-0 to get within a point at 46-45 on a free throw by junior forward Gary Francis at the 16:32 mark. Leonardo drilled another three-pointer to knot the contest at 48-48 before Catholic went on a 14-2 run to build a 62-50 edge with 11:08 to play
  • Moravian answered with its own 12-0 run as senior guard Alex Dietz hit a three-pointer, freshman guard Taylor Perlmutter had a lay-up and three free throws and Ratcliff made a pair of lay-ups to tie the contest once more at 62-62 with 7:55 to go. Sophomore guard Porter Kelly added a lay-up to knot the contest at 64-64 while Catholic followed with a 9-0 tun to take control with just under four minutes remaining

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players in double figures led by Ratcliff, who had a game-high 26 points to go with 14 rebounds and three blocked shots. For Ratcliff, it was his third double-double in four games and the 11th of his career
  • Leonardo tossed in a career-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots while Perlmutter had a career-best 10 points to go with three boards
  • Dietz finished with nine points, three rebounds and a pair of assists while Kelly added six points and two rebounds and Francis had five points and four assists
  • The Blue & Grey shot 25-of-57 from the field, 11-for-26 beyond the three-point ling and 13-for-18 at the charity stripe
