Moravian Second Half Rally Comes Up Short at No. 16 Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian University men's basketball team rallied from a 17-point second half deficit to take a lead before falling at No. 16 The Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds opened the scoring as sophomore forward Marquis Ratcliff sank a lay-up for the first points of the contest. The Blue & Grey led 5-2 after a three-point play from senior guard Mark Howell before the Cardinals netted the next eight points to build a 10-5 edge
  • Moravian trailed 20-16 at the midpoint of the first half after a three-pointer by sophomore guard Porter Kelly; however, a 14-4 run by Catholic had the Cardinals up 34-20 with just under four minutes left in the first half. Catholic pushed the edge to 17 points before a late three-pointer from Kelly cut the deficit to 42-28 at the intermission
  • The Cardinals began the second half by pushing the advantage back to 17 points at 47-30. The Hounds countered with a 12-2 run to close within seven points at 49-42 as Kelly sank another three-pointer at the 15:12 mark. The Blue & Grey continued to close the gap, getting within one halfway through the period as Ratcliff connected on a jumper to cut the score to 58-57
  • Ratcliff put the Greyhounds back on top on their next possession with a three-pointer at the 9:20 mark. Over the next six and a half minutes, the game saw a pair of ties and four lead changes before a dunk from Kelly had Moravian up 69-68 at the 2:52 mark. However, the Hounds were limited to just two points the rest of the way as Catholic finished the contest with a 9-2 run 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players score in double figures led by Ratcliff, who netted a game-high 26 points to go with seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots
  • Kelly finished with 18 points, six boards and four assists while junior forward Gary Francis had 11 points and four rebounds
  • Howell contributed seven points and two assists while junior guard/forward Michael Leonardo had six rebounds, three points and three assists
  • Sophomore forwards Uma Kalu and Liam Cummiskey and freshman guard Taylor Perlmutter all had two points
  • The Greyhounds shot 28-for-57 from the field including 18-of-32 in the second half, and the Blue & Grey made 8-of-20 three-pointers and 7-of-12 free throws
