Greyhounds Close Out 2023 Campaign with Victory over Goucher

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team closed out its 2023 season with an 8-5 victory over visiting Goucher College in Landmark Conference action on John Makuvek Field Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead midway through the first quarter when graduate student attack Connor James netted a man-up goal. However, the Gophers answered with a pair of goals to lead 2-1 after 15 minutes of action
  • James scored again with 9:37 on the clock in the second period to knot the score, and James found the net for a third time at the 5:45 mark to put Moravian back in front, 3-2. Goucher scored with just eight seconds left in the first half as the squad headed to the intermission tied at 3-3
  • The Gophers took the lead back just 1:54 into the second half before the Hounds scored three straight goals to end the quarter with the advantage. Junior attack Brennan Fluehr knotted the score at 3-3 at the 7:09 mark while freshman Vincent Devito tallied a man-up goal just 33 seconds later to give the Blue & Grey the lead for goal. Junior attack Trevor Dzama hit the net with 3:34 to go in the period as Moravian lead 6-4 after 45 minutes of play
  • Sophomore midfielder Aden Moskovitz opened the fourth quarter with a goal before Goucher stopped the Hounds' run with a tally. The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with 4:59 to play when sophomore midfielder Aaron Judge hit the net for the 8-5 lead 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had seven different players score a point with James netting three goals. Dzama, Devito and Judge all contributed a goal and an assist with Judge adding three ground balls
  • Fluehr and Moskovitz both tallied a goal while junior midfielder Joey Furino recorded an assist
  • Senior defender Shane Cassel led the Hounds with eight ground balls and four caused turnovers while sophomore midfielder Austin Hittle scooped up five ground balls. Sophomore defender Jason Levy recorded four ground balls while junior long stick midfielder Matt Baer added three ground balls
  • Sophomore Gannon Mesko was 11-for-16 on faceoffs to go with a pair of ground balls, and Mesko finished the season with a program record 190 faceoff wins, going 190-for-357 on the year
  • Sophomore goalie Thomas Lee posted six saves in the victory
  • Moravian had a 37-32 edge in shots, a 38-29 advantage in ground balls, was 11-for-16 on faceoffs, 17-for-18 on clearing attempts and 2-for-6 in man-up opportunities
