BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University honored its 2022-23 student-athletes with its inaugural All-Athlete Awards Banquet in Johnston Hall Monday evening sponsored by the Greyhounds' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
The Greyhounds handed out their annual Senior Awards as women's track & field standout Crystal Robinson was selected as the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete while golfer/men's tennis player Andrew Hozza was honored with the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete. The Blue & Grey Scholar Athlete awards were presented to field hockey student-athlete Emily Wells, who has a 3.87 GPA and is majoring in biochemistry/pre-med track, and men's tennis player Justin Szaro, who maintains a 3.91 GPA and is majoring in computer science and physics.
The H.T.D. Gillespie Award for outstanding service to Moravian's athletics program was presented to Assistant Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Coach Jon D'Ottavio. In addition to being the head throwing coach for the track & field programs and assisting the cross country squad, D'Ottavio serves as Moravian's scoreboard operator during basketball season and helps out with other game management duties throughout the year.
Moravian added new awards this year, and with the Greyhounds' spring teams still in competition, the awards window was the Spring 2022 season, the Fall 2022 campaign and the Winter 2022-23 season. The evening also included a Blue Carpet entrance for all student-athletes.
SAAC presented individual awards for Male Newcomer of the Year to men's basketball player Marquis Ratcliff, Female Newcomer of the Year to women's basketball student-athlete Tessa Zamolyi, Moravian Athletics Best Character to men's soccer player Kyle Dixon, Moravian Athletics Spirit Award to softball student-athlete Ajala Elmore, Male Athlete of the Year to baseball player Derek Holmes and Female Athlete of the Year to women's track & field athlete Lexi Groff.
St. Luke's Sports Medicine presented the Comeback Athlete of the Year to women's lacrosse player Salome Carr.
SAAC also had team awards for the Highest GPA going to Men's Cross Country and Women's Swimming, Most Decorated Team going to Women's Outdoor Track & Field, Most Community Service Hours going to the Women's Basketball squad and Play of the Year going to the Field Hockey squad for its overtime winning goal in the Landmark Conference Semifinals at The University of Scranton last fall to send the team to the conference title match for the first time in program history.
The Iron Hounds Sports Performance Awards were given to the Football and Women's Soccer teams.
Moravian concluded the night with a roll call of the 94 graduating senior student-athletes, presenting them with their framed varsity letter and a student-athlete stole for commencement. The Greyhounds also inducted 71 members into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society. Chi Alpha Sigma is the first national scholar-athlete society to honor collegiate student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition. Greyhounds who have a cumulative grade point average over a 3.4 after the fall of their junior year are inducted into the honor society and both seniors and juniors who maintain a cumulative 3.4 grade point average are honored yearly.
