Top 10 Games of 2022-23 - #3 Softball Walks Off with Extra-Inning Win over Susquehanna for 2023 Landmark Conference Title
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2022-23 athletic campaign. The next contest in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 3 highlight – the softball squad posting a 2-1, eight-inning walk-off victory over Susquehanna University to claim the 2023 Landmark Conference Championship.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2022-23 athletic campaign. The next contest in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 3 highlight – the softball squad posting a 2-1, eight-inning walk-off victory over Susquehanna University to claim the 2023 Landmark Conference Championship.
The game was played on Sunday, May 14 as the Greyhounds hosted the Landmark Conference Tournament at Blue & Grey Field for the ninth time. Susquehanna took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Greyhounds would not get onto the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh inning as the River Hawks looked to force the if necessary game of the tournament. In the seventh, freshman catcher Marcie Silberman led off with a triple to right field. Freshman Kendall Szor came in to pinch run, and she raced home with the tying run on an RBI single through the right side by junior designated player Emily Silberman.
Moravian's defense turned a double play in the top of the eighth frame and would strand a River Hawk on base to bring the Blue & Grey back to bat with the contest still knotted at 1-1. Sophomore third baseman Holly Walter drew a one-out walk for the Hounds in the bottom of the eighth, and she stole second base and moved to third on a flyout by junior left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer. Sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys won the game with an RBI single to right field to score Walter.
With the victory, Moravian won its tenth Landmark Conference title and 18th overall conference championship and earned the program's 19th berth to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
In the championship contest, Emily Silberman was 2-for-3 at the plate as the Greyhounds collected just six hits. In the circle, freshman Sarah DeStefano allowed just one run on six hits while striking out three batters.
