BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2022-23 athletic campaign. The next event in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 8 highlight – the softball team defeating No. 7 Tufts (Mass.) University, 4-1 in eight innings over two days to capture the 2023 NCAA Division III Medford (Mass.) Regional Championship, the program's sixth regional title.
The contest began on Saturday, May 20 as the if necessary game of the regional after the Jumbos had defeated the Blue & Grey earlier in the day. The Greyhounds took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the regional final when sophomore first baseman Lindsey Gawrys connected on a two-out, solo home run.
A light rain began to fall in the fourth inning, and the squads would continue to play into the seventh inning. With the Hounds at the plate in the top of the seventh and still leading 1-0, the rain began to fall harder and forced the contest into a rain delay. With the rain forecasted to last until after dark, the remainder of the game was postponed until Sunday, May 21.
The contest resumed the next day with the Blue & Grey getting three outs. The Jumbos came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and scored once to force extra innings. Moravian answered with three runs in the top of the eighth. Gawrys drove in the winning run with an RBI double while sophomore right fielder Sage Snyder had an RBI walk and freshman pitcher Sarah DeStefano hit an RBI infield single.
DeStefano, who was selected as the regional's Most Outstanding Player, would get three outs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the regional title and advance the Greyhounds to the Super Regional the following weekend.
