Greyhounds Split with Lycoming to Win Landmark Conference Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team split with visiting Lycoming College Saturday at Gillespie Field, falling 5-2 in the first game before winning the second contest 9-5 to split a Landmark Conference doubleheader but win the weekend series 2-1.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the opening contest. Senior shortstop Paul Croyle connected on a one-out single before moving to second on a groundout. Croyle stole third with two outs and as the throw sailed down the left field line, Croyle popped up and raced home
  • The Warriors would not get onto the scoreboard until the top of the ninth inning when Lycoming batted around and scored five runs
  • Moravian was able to get one run back in the bottom of the ninth until a double play ended the contest. Senior first baseman Cole Cherkas led off with a double, and he raced home on an RBI single from junior right fielder Nick Henry
  • Sophomore Ross Huffman made the start on the mound for the Blue & Grey, and he allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters in seven innings of work. Freshman Andrew Benvenuto pitched an inning and faced just three batters while freshman Nick Leoanrd gave up four runs on three hits and a walk in a third of an inning. Sophomore Stefano Garofalo pitched the final two thirds of an inning with a run on three hits and a walk to go with a strikeout

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Lycoming struck first in the second contest with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning
  • The Hounds countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 2-2. Senior catcher Connor Wengryn reached on an error to start the inning, and he crossed the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter Jared Ferguson. Senior left fielder David Olsakowski drew a walk after Wengryn reached base, and he came home on an RBI single from graduate student second baseman Chris Pow
  • Moravian took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 5-2 edge. Wengryn and Olsakowski had back-to-back singles to start the frame while Ferguson reached on an error that brought in Wengryn. Senior center fielder Matt Madigan grounded into a double play as Olsakowski scored. Pow followed with a double and scored on an RBI single by Cherkas
  • Lycoming plated a run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3
  • The Blue & Grey answered with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to stretch the advantage to 9-3. Madigan was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second and scampered home on an RBI single from Pow. Cherkas followed with a single before Croyle connected on an RBI double to score Pow. Henry ripped an RBI single that brought in Cherkas while Croyle crossed the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by graduate student third baseman Paul Hamilton
  • The Warriors pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the top of the ninth inning to finish off the scoring
  • Senior Aaron Flyte started for Moravian and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and a pair of walks to go with five strikeouts in seven innings of action. Graduate student Ethan Weber tossed two-thirds of an inning with a walk while freshman Ryan Hoffman pitched the final 1.1 innings with two runs on two hits and three walks to go with a strikeout

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 19 hits on the day with Pow going 4-for-8 with two runs, two RBIs and two doubles
  • Cherkas went 3-for-7 with three runs, an RBI and a double while Croyle had three hits with two runs, an RBI and a double
  • Olsakowski was also 3-for-7 with two runs while Henry had three hits and two RBIs
  • Madigan contributed a hit and a run while Wengryn also had a hit and scored twice
  • Hamilton finished with one hit and an RBI
