Moravian Drops Landmark Series Opener at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad dropped the opening game of a Landmark Conference series at Susquehanna University Saturday, falling 7-5.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman designated hitter Jared Ferguson led off with a double to left field and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Paul Croyle
  • The River Hawks countered with four runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 4-1 advantage
  • The Blue & Grey plated two more runs in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 4-3. Senior catcher Connor Wengryn reached on a fielder's choice and raced home on a wild pitch while Ferguson singled and scored on an RBI double from senior center fielder Matt Madigan
  • Susquehanna added a run on the fourth inning, and the River Hawks scored twice in the top bottom of the eighth for a 7-3 advantage
  • The Hounds finished the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Senior left fielder David Olsakowski drew a leadoff walk, and he scored when graduate student second baseman Chris Pow connected on a two-run homer, his third home run of the season and fifth of his career 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had eight hits in the contest with Ferguson going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs
  • Pow was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a homer and a run while Madigan had a hit, a double and an RBI
  • Wengryn added a hit and a run while senior first baseman Cole Cherkas added a hit
  • Olsakowski scored a run and Croyle contributed an RBI
  • Senior David Ciaccio made the start on the mound for the Hounds, and he allowed five runs, four earned on six hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts. Freshman Antorius Cofield tossed 1.2 innings with four walks while freshman Ryan Hoffman pitched the final 1.1 innings with two runs on three hits
