Moravian Opens 2023 with Non-Conference Win at Centenary (N.J.)

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team began its 2023 season with a 25-5 non-conference victory at Centenary (N.J.) University Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds needed just 35 seconds to find the net to begin the season as junior attack Brennan Fluehr scored the opening goal of the spring. Moravian scored eight more goals in the opening quarter with three coming from junior attack Trevor Dzama that included one man-down tally. The Hounds also had a man-up goal in the first period as Fluehr scored his third goal of the afternoon to give the Blue & Grey a 9-0 lead after 15 minutes of action
  • Moravian put 13 more goals in the cage in the second quarter with senior midfielder Jack Bakey scoring four times in the period including two man-up goals while Dzama added two more markers and freshman attack Vincent Devito had two goals with one man-up tally as the Greyhounds headed to the intermission with a 22-0 lead
  • Centenary scored the first two goals of the third quarter before freshman midfielder RJ Toogood netted his first career goal
  • The Cyclones outscored Moravian 3-2 in the fourth quarter with the final goal of the afternoon by Fluehr with a man-up set a new program record for the Greyhounds with 25 goals in a match 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 13 different players score a goal with Dzama leading the way with five goals and four assists. Fluehr scored four goals while Bakey netted four goals Devito added three goals and three assists
  • Sophomore attack Dan Kelly contributed a goal and an assist while Ulmer, Toogood, freshman midfielder Mike Noonan, senior attack Will Melick, freshman attack Ryan Kokoszka, sophomore midfielder Nick Sullivan, junior midfielder Jack Swistak and sophomore midfielder Aaron Judge all scored one goal. Ulmer and Swistak each had four ground balls while Bakey, Toogood and Kelly all scooped up two ground balls
  • Junior midfielder Connor Estes had a pair of assists and three ground balls while going 7-for-9 on face-offs. Sophomore midfielder Gannon Mesko was 7-for-8 on face-offs with three ground balls while freshman midfielder Frank Britsch went 10-for-12 on face-offs with eight ground balls
  • Junior long stick midfielder Matt Baer, sophomore defender Jason Levy, sophomore midfielder Austin Hittle, sophomore midfielder Kyle Weiss and freshman defender Mike Sickler all had a pair of ground balls
  • Sophomore goalie Thomas Lee recorded one save in 25 minutes of action while junior Avery Napolitano had two saves in 20 minutes and sophomore Sean Boyer recorded twosaves in 15 minutes of action
  • The Hounds had a 51-24 advantage in shots, a 46-21 edge in ground balls and won 26-of-32 face-offs in the contest. The Blue & Grey were also 5-for-7 on man-up opportunities while holding the Cyclones to 2-for-8 on special team with Moravian adding a man-down goal
