Hounds Fall to SUNY Potsdam in 2023 Home Opener on John Makuvek Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team fell to visiting SUNY Potsdam, 15-9, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon as the Greyhounds played their first home match of the season on John Makuvek Field.

How It Happened

  • The Bears scored the opening goal of the contest just 1:19 into action, but the Hounds countered 40 seconds later as sophomore midfielder Aaron Judge found the net. Potsdam added two goals to take a 3-1 lead before markers from Judge and sophomore midfielder Nick Sullivan knotted the match at 3-3 with 3:03 to go in the first quarter. The Bears scored once more in the final minute of the period to lead 4-3 after 15 minutes of action
  • Potsdam converted on a man-up opportunity for the first goal of the second quarter; however, Moravian would make in a one-goal match just 20 seconds later when freshman attack Vincent Devito connected on a man-up goal just 20 second later. The Bears would score the last three goals of the period to head to the intermission with an 8-4 advantage
  • Potsdam also netted the first two markers of the second half before Judge found the net again for the Blue & Grey. The Beard scored once more for an 11-5 edge after 45 minutes of play
  • Judge opened the fourth quarter with a goal just 34 seconds into the period, and Moravian added three more goals with freshman attack Ryan Kokoszka, Devito and junior attack Brennan Fluehr all finding the net with Devito and Fluehr connecting during a two-minute man-up advantage for the Greyhounds. However, Potsdam also scored four goals during the final 15 minutes of action

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had five different players score with Judge netting a team-high four goals while Devito had two goals and a pair of ground balls
  • Fluehr contributed a goal and an assist while Kokoszka and Sullivan each tallied one goal
  • Junior attack Trevor Dzama recorded two assists to go with two ground balls while sophomore attack Dan Kelly added an assist and three ground balls
  • Sophomore goalie Thomas Lee posted 12 saves to go with three ground balls
  • Sophomore midfielder Gannon Mesko was 12-for-27 on face-offs to go with a team-high five ground balls while junior long stick midfielder Matt Baer scooped up four ground balls and sophomore midfielder Kyle Weiss added three ground balls. Senior midfielder Shane Cassel had a pair of caused turnovers to go with two ground balls
  • The Hounds were 3-for-6 on extra-man opportunities in the contest, and Moravian was 14-for-19 on clearing attempts
