Moravian Drops Landmark Conference Opener at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse squad dropped its opening game of the 2023 Landmark Conference season, falling to host The Catholic University of America, 27-10, Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals netted the first four goals of the match before senior midfielder Jack Bakey found the net for the Greyhounds. Catholic scored three more times in the opening quarter while sophomore attack Dan Kelly scored for Moravian as the Cardinals led 7-2 after 15 minutes of action.
  • The Hounds opened the second quarter with three consecutive goals including two by sophomore midfielder Aaron Judge with one coming man-up and a one by freshman attack Vincent Devito as the Blue & Grey cut the deficit to 7-5 midway through the second period. Catholic countered with five straight goals before Devito finished the half with another marker as the Cardinals headed to the locker room with a 12-6 advantage
  • The Cardinals netted the first two goals of the second half before graduate student attack Connor James found the net. Moravian scored twice more in the period with junior attack Trevor Dzama and Judge both putting the ball in the net; however, Catholic tallied six times to lead 20-9 after 45 minutes of play
  • Freshman midfielder Mike Noonan scored a goal for the Greyhounds in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals scored seven times in the period

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had nine different student-athletes score a point with Judge netting a hat trick. Devito had two goals while Dzama contributed a goal and four assists
  • James recorded a goal and an assist while Kelly and Noonan each had one goal. Junior attack Brennan Fluehr and sophomore midfielder Steven Salica both had an assist
  • Freshman defender Justin Ganci led the Hounds with four ground balls and four caused turnovers while senior midfielder Shane Cassel added three caused turnovers and two ground balls
  • Sophomore Gannon Mesko was 8-for-31 on faceoffs with a pair of ground balls
  • Sophomore goalie Thomas Lee posted nine saves in 45 minutes of action while junior Avery Napolitano recorded three saves in the final 15 minutes of the match
