Moravian Races Past Juniata on Senior Day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse squad scored six goals in a five-minute span in the first quarter to open up a lead on the way to a 23-8 victory over visiting Juniata College in Landmark Conference action at John Makuvek Field Saturday on Senior Day.

How It Happened

  • The Eagles scored the first goal of the afternoon while the Greyhounds would get on the scoreboard at the 7:59 mark as junior attack Trevor Dzama found the net. The goal set off a 6-0 run in a span of 4:55 as the Blue & Grey moved ahead 6-1. Dzama added another goal in the run while graduate student attach Connor James scored twice and junior long stick midfielder Matt Baer and freshman attack Vincent Devito both tallied one goal. Juniata did add two goals before the end of the quarter to cut the Moravian edge to 6-3 after 15 minutes of action
  • The Eagles also netted the first goal of the second period to get with two goals at 6-4 before the Blue & Grey ran off another five goals to take control. Freshman attack Ryan Kokoszka and Dzama both scored man-up goals while Devito and sophomore midfielders Aaron Judge and Nick Sullivan each scored once to give Moravian an 11-4 advantage heading into the intermission
  • Devito and Judge also had goals to start the second half to stretch the edge to 13-4. After Juniata scored, sophomore face-off specialist Gannon Mesko and James both netted goals before the Eagles scored again. Baer netted his second goal as he scooped a ground ball and shot behind this head while James and Judge each added one more marker as the Hounds lead 18-6 after 45 minutes of play
  • The Greyhounds netted four goals to start the fourth quarter with Judge, Sullivan, Devito and senior attack Will Melick all finding the net with Melick scoring a man-up marker. Juniata scored twice in the final 10 minutes while Judge hit the net once more or the Hounds
  • Prior to the match, Moravian honored its senior class of Melick, Jack Bakey, Shane Cassel, Matt Ingenito and Josh Rutkiewicz 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 10 different players score a point with Judge netting five goals and an assist. Devito and James both contributed four goals and two assists with James scooping up four ground balls
  • Dzama recorded three goals, six assists and a pair of ground balls while Baer and Sullivan each scored twice with Baer adding five ground balls
  • Kokoszka, Melick and Mesko all tallied one goal with Mesko going 18-for-21 on faceoffs with a team-high 10 ground balls
  • Junior midfielder Joey Furino posted an assist while Cassel had five ground balls and two caused turnovers and freshman defender Justin Ganci also scooped up five ground balls
  • Bakey and sophomore midfielder Austin Hittle both had four ground balls while sophomore midfielder Kyle Weiss and sophomore attack Dan Kelly both had three ground balls with Weiss causing two turnovers
  • Sophomore Thomas Lee started in goal and had one save and a pair of ground balls in 35 minutes of action while junior goalie Avery Napolitano had one save in 16 minutes and sophomore Sean Boyer recorded four saves in the final nine minutes
  • The Hounds tied the school record with 68 shots in the match, holding a 68-26 advantage, and Moravian also had a 57-34 edge in ground balls, won 27-of-33 faceoffs, was 3-for-6 with the extra-man and was 16-for-18 on clearing attempts
