Moravian Holds Off Muskies in Opening Round of Blue Ridge Classic

FERRUM, Va. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team held off a second half rally by Muskingum (Ohio) University to post an 11-8 victory in the opening round of the Blue Ridge Classic hosted by Ferrum (Va.) College Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds scored the opening goal with freshman attack Vincent Devito finding the net just over two minutes into action. Sophomore midfielder Nick Sullivan scored with just over five minutes left in the quarter, and sophomore attack Dan Kelly and Devito contributed man-up goals in the final minute of the period as the Blue & Grey led 4-0 after 15 minutes of action
  • Kelly pushed the Moravian edge to 5-0 with a goal roughly four minutes into the second quarter before Devito contributed two more goals and junior attack Trevor Dzama hit the net to make the score 8-0 with eight and a half minutes until halftime. The Muskies netted their first goal of the match with just over six minutes on the clock, and Muskingum added a second man-up goal to cut the Blue & Grey's advantage to 8-2 before Devito scored with 17 seconds left in half to sound the Hounds to the intermission with a 9-2 edge
  • Muskingum scored the only four goals in the third period to pull within 9-6 after 45 minutes of play
  • The Muskies netted the first goal of the fourth quarter to make it a two-score match at 9-7 before Devito and sophomore midfielder Aaron Judge scored for Moravian to snap a 5-0 run by Muskingum and giving the Greyhounds an 11-7 advantage with 6:37 to play. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had five different players score with Devito netting a career-high six goals with one coming man-up. Kelly contributed two goals, one of them man-up, and three assists to go with four ground balls and two caused turnovers while Dzama and Judge each had a goal and two assists
  • Sullivan tallied one goal while sophomore midfielder Aden Moskovitz had one assist
  • Sophomore midfielder Gannon Mesko was 14-for-22 on faceoffs and scooped up a team-high eight ground balls while sophomore defender Jason Levy had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman defender James Panico added two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while junior long stick midfielder Matt Baer had two ground balls and freshman defender Justin Ganci posted two caused turnovers
  • Sophomore goalie Thomas Lee recorded 11 saves as he improved to 2-1 on the year
  • The Hounds had a 56-34 advantage in shots, and the Blue & Grey were 14-for-23 on faceoffs, 2-for-3 on man-up opportunities and 18-for-23 on clearing attempts
