Greyhounds Roll 92-50 in First Win of Season

The Moravian College men's team defeated SUNY Cobleskill 92-50 Saturday afternoon at the Scotty Wood Tournament in Allentown. Junior guard D.J. Strayhorn led the way going 9-for-14 from the field on his way to 25 points, five assists and two steals.

The Greyhounds started quickly going up 9-0 with points scored by Strayhorn, junior guard Garrett Johnson and senior forward Jeff Cullinan. The Fighting Tigers would battle back to make the score 12-6 after two three-pointers from freshman guard Alexis Nunez and freshman forward Dane Brown, but that is as close as Cobleskill would get in this one. Moravian would continue to increase their lead by way of the three-pointer in the first half. Strayhorn would hit one to put them up 15-6, and then Johnson would hit another to make it 24-8. Freshman guard Kevin Pankonien followed up with another three to go up 27-10, and Dondre Perry nailed the final three of the half to put Moravian up 42-15 with 30 seconds left in the half. The Greyhounds would take a 44-16 lead into the half.

Moravian shot 51.5 percent from the field in the first half and went 6-for-15 from beyond the arc. The Greyhounds held the Fighting Tigers to 21.4 percent from the field in the first half.

It would be much of the same in the second half for Moravian as they would continue to build on its lead. The Greyhounds would go up by 30 points with layup from Johnson with 18 minutes left. Cobleskill would try and battle back but Moravian's offense proved to be too much as senior forward Marcus Hardy (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) would layup a shot to put the Greyhounds up 40 with just under nine minutes to go. Senior guard Mark Koelbel would make a layup with six minutes to left to put Moravian up 84-36, with a 48 point lead that would be their largest of the game. The Greyhounds would finish with a 92-50 victory, their first of the season.

For Moravian, Pankonien scored 12 points and added four assists while Perry had eight points and four rebounds. Cullinan pulled down 11 rebounds and scored four points while Hardy totaled 12 rebounds and eight points. Johnson put up eight points, four assists and three rebounds. Freshman guard Izel Dickerson had five points, three rebounds and three assists while sophomore guard Kenny Gula tallied seven points and one assist.

Cobleskill was led by Nunez with nine points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Brendan Doherty scored seven points and pulled down three rebounds.

For Head Coach Jim Walker this is his 399th victory and needs one more win for 400 wins at Moravian.

The Greyhounds travel to DeSales University Tuesday, November 22nd for a non-conference game. The contest is scheduled for 8 p.m.
