Rocco Calvo & Gil Gillespie selected to MAC Hall of Fame

ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Former Moravian College head coaches and athletic directors Rocco Calvo and Harvey "Gil" Gillespie have been selected as part of the inaugural class to be inducted into the Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame announced by the MAC office Wednesday.

The MAC of which Moravian was a member from 1945 until 2007 is establishing a hall of fame as part of the celebration of its 100th anniversary in 2012-13. Calvo and Gillespie are two of a 36-member inaugural class selected from current and former MAC member institutions, and they are both members of Moravian's Athletic Hall of Fame as well.

As baseball, basketball, and head football coach at Moravian, Calvo combined for a career record of 318-163-13. He led the "Hounds" football team to the MAC Southern Division championship in 1970, baseball to a MAC Southern Division championship in 1980, and was named MAC South Football Coach of the Year in 1984. From 1975-1992, Calvo served as Moravian's Director of Athletics.  The turf field (installed in 2005) in Moravian's football stadium was renamed Rocco Calvo Field.

Gillespie led the Moravian baseball team to four MAC Division Championships including a 13-0-2 team that won the 1962 MAC Northern Championship, and the overall MAC title in 1960 with a 4-3 victory over the University of Delaware.  Gillespie also guided the men's basketball team to a MAC Division Championship in 1947, carrying a 143-160 record in 18 seasons. On the baseball field, Gillespie had just one losing season amassing a 352-175-6 record over 37 years. When Moravian joined the MAC in 1945, Gillespie was the Director of Athletics. The Moravian baseball field is named in his honor.

Moravian will be planning an on-campus ceremony to honor Calvo and Gillespie during the 2012-13 academic year and will announce more information when the ceremony in finalized.
