Baseball Falls to Landmark Conference Rival Scranton, 9-4

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Moravian College baseball team fell to the University of Scranton, 9-4, during Sunday afternoons Landmark Conference contest.

Senior pitcher Rocky Sawyer would get the nod for the Royals, but he would get into trouble quickly as senior shortstop Dave Zubia hit a triple down the right field line to start the contest. Classmate first baseman Kevin O'Keefe then drove him home with a double to center field for a 1-0 lead.

Scranton took the lead right back in the bottom half of the first after freshman Michael Umerich hit a lead-off single, and junior Tim LeCompte followed with a home run to left field. The Royals tacked on two more runs to take a 4-1 lead into the second.

The Greyhounds added one run in the third after Zubia doubled and sophomore second baseman Daniel Seitzinger drove him home with a single down the right field line.

Scranton struck for two more runs in the bottom of the third off of three hits.

Senior third baseman Gregg Steinman would double to center field in the fifth to score O'Keefe while making the score 6-3, Scranton.

The Royals tacked on three more runs while Moravian added one run in the later innings to go onto win 9-4.

Zubia went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and a triple while O'Keefe went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and run. Steinman went 1-for-3 with a RBI while sophomore outfielder Joseph Connell went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run.

Sawyer earned the victory ager pitching a complete game while striking out five and giving up four runs. Senior Jesse Outhouse went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs while sophomore Eric Pizzico went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman Ross Danzig had two hits, a run and a RBI while LeCompte had two RBIs.

Moravian returns to action on Tuesday, April 17th as they take on DeSales University in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Limeport Stadium.
