37 Moravian Student-Athletes Named to Landmark Spring Academic Honor Roll

MADISON, N.J. --- The Landmark Conference has recognized 310 student-athletes including 37 from Moravian College by selecting them for the 2012 Spring Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. The honorees were selected from all eight Landmark Conference institutions.

The Landmark Academic Honor Roll recognizes all spring student-athletes of sophomore standing or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. The student-athletes must complete the spring season in good standing with their team. All eight Landmark Conference institutions placed at least ten student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll and all eight spring Landmark sports were represented on the team.

The Landmark Spring All-Academic Team, which features two male and two female student-athletes from each Landmark institution will be released later this season. In addition, a Senior Scholar Athlete will be chosen for each Landmark sport.

The Landmark Conference is in its fifth season of competition and includes eight institutions covering the mid-Atlantic region. The Landmark crowned eight team championships this spring.  The conference also had 12 student-athletes earn Capital One Academic All-America honors selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America this spring including five from Moravian and a total of 14 earn Capital One Academic All-District accolades.

Moravian had student-athletes from six of its spring teams that compete in the conference with the men's indoor track team leading the way with eight honorees. The softball team had ten members named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll.

The nationally-ranked #24 softball team finished its season with a 35-11 record while capturing its 13th straight conference title. Three juniors made the academic honor roll – Brook Kowal (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis), Alyssa Fegely (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) and Shannen Mohr (Slatington, PA/Parkland) as well as seven sophomores – Leann Ventriglia (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), Miranda Sergas (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), Cassie Ernst (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona), Eavan Matz (Port Jervis, NY/Delaware Valley), Alycia Sabol (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh), Elizabeth Tillou (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) and Taylor Mihalik (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty).

The men's outdoor track team captured its fifth straight Landmark Conference Title, and had eight members named to academic honor roll that included six seniors – All-American and Capital One Academic All-American Gary Zack (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood), Matthew Lutcza (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley), All-American and Capital One Academic All-American Timothy Layng (Canton, PA/Canton), Nicco Dalpiaz (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy), Kyle D'Angelo (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) and Jordan Barton (Williamsport, PA/Montoursville). Junior Travis King (Wilmington, DE/Concord) and sophomore Craig Arner (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) were also named to the academic honor roll.

The women's outdoor track team won its fifth straight Landmark Conference title, and had seven members named to the academic honor roll. Four seniors were named to the honor roll – Lisa Williamson (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson), All-American and Capital One Academic All-American Abigail Schaffer (Easton, PA/Easton), Kristina Ruggiero (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) and Cadee Rockwell (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson). Junior Emma Pacheco (Flourtown, PA/Mount St. Joseph Academy) and sophomores Jennifer Parodi (Holland, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) and Allison Vanek (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson) were also named to the honor roll.

The baseball team wrapped up its season with a 28-16 record after falling one game short of the Landmark Conference title. It had three seniors named to the academic honor roll – All-American Dave Zubia (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic), Capital One Academic All-American Austin Rock (Arlington, VA/Flour Bluff (TX)) and Capital One Academic All-American Brendan Close (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom). Three sophomores also earned the honor – Harrison Fonteix (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge), Jason Jamula (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephens & St. Agnes) and Robert Solano (Stroudsburg, PA/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg).

Three women's tennis players were named to the academic honor roll. All three of them are sophomores – Erica Venuti (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township), Olivia Sonnabend (King of Prussia, PA/Delaware County Christian) and Katie Zien (West Suffield, CT/Suffield).

Three men's tennis players earned academic honor roll honors. Seniors Kevin Holze (Bayside, NY/St. Francis Prep) and David Chan (Macau, China/The Phelps School (PA)) and junior Brad Kutcha (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park).
