Offense Powers Moravian Past Albright, 9-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College baseball team defeated Albright College, 9-1, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference contest. The Greyhounds used nine pitchers in the contest, all pitching one inning, as sophomore Timothy Smith earned the win.

Sophomore pitcher Thomas Mariano would get the start for Moravian. He would get two strikeouts and a fly out to get out of the first.

Sophomore catcher Zach Graham and freshman third baseman John Medvecky would hit back-to-back singles for the Lions in the top of the second. Sophomore pitch Jason Jamula would get three strikeouts to get out of the inning for the Greyhounds.

Senior catcher Blake Shortall started the fifth with a walk. He then worked his way to third after a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt. Classmate shortstop Dave Zubia then drove him in for the first run of the game off a double down the left field line. Sophomore second baseman Daniel Seitzinger followed with a double up the middle to score Zubia to put the Greyhounds up 2-0.

Senior designated hitter Austin Rock would start the sixth with a lead-off home run to left field to make the score 3-0. Freshman outfielder Matt Hanson followed with a single, and classmate outfielder Chris Lansberry walked to put two men on base. Hanson and Lansberry then committed a double steal, and an error by the catcher would allow Hanson to score on the play. Lansberry then scored after an error by the second baseman to put Moravian up 5-0. The Greyhounds would add one more run after a couple of errors by Albright for a 6-0 lead.

The Lions would add one run off of one hit in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-1.

Back-to-back singles from sophomore shortstop Kyle Spence and freshman second baseman Colin Case would set up senior first baseman Kevin O'Keefe for a RBI double to center field. Sophomore designated hitter Joel Middleton followed with a two RBI single through the left side for a 9-1 lead.

O'Keefe went 3-for-5 in the contest, bringing him one hit shy of 200 career hits. Hanson went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases while Zubia went 1-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and a RBI. Rock had a home run while Seitzinger went 1-for-2 with a RBI. Lansberry went 1-for-3 with a run scored while Shortall scored a run.

Freshman pitcher Alex Myers took the loss for the Lions after going five innings and allowing two runs. Classmate designated hitter Max Dundore went 2-for-3 a RBI while Medvecky went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Moravian returns to action tomorrow, April 11th for a non-conference contest versus Penn State-Berks. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
