MADISON, N.J. --- Seniors Austin Rock (Arlington, VA/Flour Bluff (TX)), Timothy Layng (Canton, PA/Canton), Abigail Schaffer (Easton, Pa./Easton) and sophomore Eavan Matz (Port Jervis, NY/Delaware Valley) from Moravian College have been named to the 2012 Landmark Conference Spring All-Academic Team.
The Landmark Conference has selected 32 student-athletes for the 2012 Spring Landmark All-Academic Team. Two male and two female athletes from each of the eight Landmark institutions were selected for the team which honors athletes who have excelled athletically and academically. Nominees could compete in any of the Landmark winter sports and must be a sophomore or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better.
Rock helped the Moravian College baseball team to its fourth straight 20-win season. He was on the 2012 and 2011 Landmark All-Conference First Teams as well as the 2012 D3baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team, contributed a .364 average, 56 hits, 37 runs, 15 doubles, a team high four home runs and 38 RBIs this spring. In his career, Rock had a .311 average (125-for-402) with 31 doubles, 13 homers, 81 runs scored and 97 RBIs. He was a member of the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll the last three seasons including 2012. Rock was also named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Baseball First Team.
Layng earned All-America honors for the Moravian outdoor track & field team. He placed fourth in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Championships after tying his own school-record of 5.00 meters (16 feet, 4 ¾ inches). Layng also took gold in the pole vault at the Landmark Conference Championship meet. He was also named to the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll and the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Men's Track & Field First Team.
Schaffer earned All-America honors for the Moravian outdoor track & field team. She was runner-up in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Championships with a height of 4.15 meters (13 feet, 7 ¼ inches). Schaffer still owns the NCAA Division III pole vault record set at 4.22 meters (13 feet, 10 inches). She also captured the Landmark Conference pole vault title this season. She was also named to the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll and the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Women's Track & Field Second Team.
Matz helped the Moravian College softball team post a 35-11 record while capturing its 13th straight conference title. She played in 45 of 46 games for the Greyhounds. Matz collected 15 hits, 11 runs scored, five RBIs and two stolen bases to go with her .975 fielding percentage. She was also named to the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll.
