TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College senior Craig Arner has been selected as the 2014 Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete for Men's Outdoor Track & Field.
The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors and sports information directors. Chosen at the conclusion of each sport season, the 10 spring honorees are being announced last week and this week.
"I'm extremely proud of how Craig Arner has done here at Moravian," stated Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "He has done exceptionally well in the classroom and has actively sought opportunities to better prepare himself for his career path with summer internship opportunities and job shadowing at local police departments. It's something I stress to current and prospective students that they need to do more than just go to class. Become immersed in your major, gain experience, expand your resume, and Craig has gone above and beyond that both in and out of the classroom the past four years.
"Athletically, Craig has been as determined as any athlete we've had here, and has made steady progress all four years, culminating with him nearly breaking 16 seconds in the hurdles late this past season," Baumann continued. "He placed at Landmarks numerous times, and even qualified for ECACs in the 4x100 relay. Craig will be missed. He was a great personality to have around in the office and on the team, and has been another tremendous example of a student-athlete who has represented Moravian and our track program as well as anyone could."
Arner helped the Greyhounds to a runner-up finish at the 2014 Landmark Outdoor Championships after the squad won the title in his first three seasons. The Hounds also won four Landmark indoor titles during Arner's career.
On the track, Arner competed in the 110-meter high hurdles, 200-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay this season. As part of the relay, he competed at the prestigious Penn Relays, as well as the ECAC Championships. He had also competed in the 100-meter dash in his career. Arner participated in the 55-meter dash, 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash and 4x200-meter relay indoors, winning a Landmark title in the relay at the 2012 Landmark meet.
Off the track, Arner has maintained a 3.62 GPA in sociology while minoring in political science. Arner made Moravian's Dean's List five times, and he is a six-time selection to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. When he wasn't on the track or in class, Arner, whose father Mike is a 1985 Moravian graduate and member of the Greyhounds' Hall of Fame, worked as a 26 Point Student Ambassador for the admissions office, giving tours to prospective students and their families.
