Greyhounds Defeat Goucher in Breast Cancer Awareness

The Moravian College women's soccer team closed out its 2011 home Landmark Conference season with a 3-0 win over Goucher College Saturday on the HUB Quad as the Greyhounds celebrated Senior Day and played their annual Breast Cancer Awareness contest.

Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when junior defender Eileen Black headed in a corner kick by senior midfielder Jenna Stickle for her fourth goal of the season.

The Greyhounds would extend the lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute when senior forward Arielle Caldas, pictured at right, scored an unassisted goal. For Caldas, it was her fourth tally of the season and 30th of her career, just the fourth player in school history to reach 30 career goals. Caldas is also fourth in the Moravian record books with 68 career points. The Greyhounds would get four more shots off in the first half, and head to the intermission with a 2-0 lead.

In the 52nd minute, Black hit the post after another corner kick by Stickle before senior midfielder Kristin Popovice tallied an unassisted goal to push the lead to 3-0. For Popovice, it was her first goal in over two years. The last time she scored was in a 4-0 win over Delaware Valley College on September 9, 2009.

Moravian continued to push towards another goal with five more shots in the second half including a shot by Popovice, pictured at left, that hit the post at the end of the match. The Greyhounds had a 17-4 advantage in shots throughout the contest and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

Greyhound junior goalie Tori Korona made two saves for her first collegiate shutout, and she evened her record at 2-2 on the season. Junior goalie Regan Foy had two stops for the Gophers in 25 minutes of action while freshman goalie Isa Cidral had five saves in the final 65 minutes.

Moravian will closes out its 2011 home season on Wednesday, October 26 with a non-conference match versus York College of Pennsylvania in a 3:30 p.m. match on the HUB Quad.

The Greyhounds will close out their 2011 Landmark Conference campaign next Saturday, October 29 in a contest at Susquehanna University at 3:30 p.m. Moravian can clinch its second straight Landmark Conference Tournament appearance and a fifth straight postseason berth with a win in that match.
