Matos & Carisone Honored as Landmark Conference Softball Athlete & Pitcher of the Week

TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College juniors catcher Janae Matos and pitcher Amanda Carisone have been honored as the Landmark Conference Softball Athlete and Pitcher of the Week for their performances last week.

The duo helped the No. 14 ranked Greyhounds to a 7-1 week at the Spring Games played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida, and Moravian returned from the trip with a 9-1 overall record.

Matos was 17-for-27 with seven doubles, a home run, which was a grand slam, five runs and 12 RBIs for a .643 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Matos had 48 putouts behind the plate while catching seven of the eight games. Matos had six multi-hit games was added three hits in three different contests. She had two doubles in wins over Haverford College and Wittenberg University while connecting on a grand slam in a victory over Penn State-Behrend.

"Janae is seeing the ball really well to start the year and is making good contact every time she swings the bat," stated Head Coach John Byrne. "Janae also does an outstanding job behind the plate with our pitchers and has been a key part to their strong start."

Carisone had a 4-0 week in the circle to go with a 0.81 ERA, just five runs allowed, three earned, in 26 innings of action, and she gave up just 19 hits and four walks while striking out 16 batters. Carisone started all four games and had three complete games, combining with freshman Paige Lesher on a 12-0 shutout of Mount Union. Carisone also had nine assists in the field during the week. Carisone moved into a tie for eighth in school history with her 42nd career win and eighth in career strikeouts with 240 to end the week.

"Amanda has had a strong start to the season and looked in midseason form during our week in Florida," Byrne commented. "She showed good control of all of her pitches and gave us some really quality starts."

Moravian is slated to return to action on Saturday, March 18 when the squad opens its 2017 Landmark Conference season with a doubleheader versus The Catholic University of America at Blue & Grey Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
