Matos & Carisone Selected as ECAC DIII Metro Player & Pitcher of the Week

DANBURY, Conn. --- Moravian College juniors catcher Janae Matos and pitcher Amanda Carisone have been selected as the ECAC Division III Metro Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for their performances last week.

Matos and Carisone helped the No. 14 ranked Greyhounds to a 7-1 week at the Spring Games played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. Moravian, which remained No. 14 in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll for a second straight week, is 9-1 overall on the year.

Matos hit .630 for the week as she was 17-for-27 at the plate with seven doubles, a home run, five runs and 12 RBIs for a .643 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Matos collected 48 putouts behind the plate while catching seven of the eight games. Matos had six multi-hit games, and she added three hits in three different contests. She had two doubles in wins over Haverford College and Wittenberg (Ohio) University while connecting on a grand slam in a victory over Penn State-Behrend.

"Janae is seeing the ball really well to start the year and is making good contact every time she swings the bat," commented Head Coach John Byrne. "Janae also does an outstanding job behind the plate with our pitchers and has been a key part to their strong start."

Carisone posted a 4-0 week in the circle to go along with a 0.81 ERA, just five runs allowed, three earned, in 26 innings of action, and she gave up just 19 hits and four walks while striking out 16 batters. Carisone started all four games and had three complete games while combining with freshman Paige Lesher on a 12-0 shutout of the University of Mount Union (Ohio). Carisone recorded a putout and nine assists in the field during the week. Carisone has moved into a tie for eighth in school history with her 42nd career win and eighth in career strikeouts with 240.

"Amanda has had a strong start to the season and looked in midseason form during our week in Florida," Byrne said. "She showed good control of all of her pitches and gave us some really quality starts."

Moravian is slated to return to action on Thursday, March 23 when the squad travels to Ursinus College for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
