MALVERN, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team scored 45 points in the second half to stretch a one-point lead to a 77-65 victory at Immaculata University in non-conference action Wednesday evening.
The Greyhounds, now 5-1 on the season, had three players in double figures led by junior guard Karlie Brogan, who tossed in a career-high 24 points to go with nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Juniors guard Maddie Capuano and forward Nadine Ewald each scored 18 points with Capuano dishing out five assists and Ewald grabbing seven rebounds.
Senior guard/forward Emily Walls contributed six points to go with career highs of seven rebounds and six assists while sophomore guard Jennifer McClave had a career-best seven boards to go with four assists and two points. Senior forward Caitlin Flanagan, junior guard Brooke Santy and sophomore forward Jordan Beneducci each had two points while senior forward Ariana Caiati and freshmen guards Linnaea Leister and Hannah Fenstermacher all had one point with Caiati adding four rebounds.
The Hounds were 29-for-68 from the floor (43.6 percent) and had 24 assists on the 29 baskets, and the Blue and Grey connected on 3-of-11 three-pointers and 16-of-22 free throw attempts. Moravian finished the evening with a 43-21 advantage on the boards and forced the Mighty Macs into 20 turnovers while only committing 15 miscues.
Brogan hit a lay-up off of the opening tip and added a three-pointer for a 5-0 edge. Capuano made it 6-0 with a free throw, and baskets by Brogan and Ewald had the advantage in double digits at 12-2 just 4:10 into action. The Greyhounds would have a 19-12 lead after 10 minutes of action.
Immaculata closed within three early in the second quarter before a jumper by Beneducci and a three-pointer from Capuano had the Hounds back up 24-16. Moravian's edge was still eight points, 30-22, after a free throw from Caiati but the Mighty Macs had a 7-2 run to end the half as the Blue and Grey headed to the locker room with a 32-29 advantage.
The Mighty Macs also scored the first two baskets of the third quarter to take a 33-32 lead before Brogan scored. The lead traded hands a total of seven times with Immaculata leading 48-46 with 2:42 left in the period. Ewald hit back-to-back lay-ups to give Moravian the lead for good, and a jumper by Capuano late in the quarter had the Greyhounds leading 54-49 after 30 minutes of play.
Capuano scored twice to start the final quarter and the lead would go back into double digits, 62-51, for the Hounds on a lay-up by Brogan with 7:25 remaining. Brogan and Santy each hit two free throws in the final minute as the Moravian advantage reached 17 points, 76-59, with 43 seconds left before a pair of late three-pointers from the Mighty Macs set the final score.
The Greyhounds are scheduled to begin the 2018-19 Landmark Conference season on Saturday, December 1 when the squad hosts Elizabethtown College in the conference opener beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
