HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team earned an 80-55 victory at Juniata College in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds, now 14-7 overall, moved into a tie for third place in the Landmark Conference standings with the Eagles at 6-4 on the year with the triumph.
The Hounds had three players score in double figures led by junior guard Maddie Capuano, who had a game-high 25 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals as she moved up three spots to 15th in school history with 1,146 career points. Junior guard Karlie Brogan tossed in 21 points to go with four boards while junior forward Nadine Ewald had 17 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Senior guard/forward Emily Walls contributed six points, four assists and two boards while senior forward Ariana Caiati added six rebounds and five points. Sophomore guard Jennifer McClave and senior guard/forward Caitlin Flanagan each had four boards and two points while freshman guard Kayla Yoegel had two points and six rebounds.
The Blue and Grey connected on 29-of-65 field goal attempts, 6-of-12 three-pointers and 16-of-20 free throws in the contest, and Moravian also had a 41-34 advantage on the boards. The Hounds also forced Juniata into 21 turnovers while committing just 11 miscues.
Capuano opened the scoring with a three-pointer, and Brogan followed with a lay-up and Walls drained a three-pointer for an 8-0 lead. The Eagles would pull back within a point at 10-9, but the Greyhounds scored eight straight capped off by a fast break lay-up from Brogan for an 18-9 edge with 2:40 left in the opening quarter. The Hounds would have an 18-12 lead after 10 minutes of action.
McClave hit a jumper to open the second quarter and baskets from Brogan and Capuano push the Moravian advantage to 24-12 just 1:35 into the second period. Juniata answered with a 7-0 run to close within five points, but the Eagles would get no closer as the Blue and Grey headed to the locker room with a 39-31 edge.
The Greyhounds poured in 28 points in the third quarter and used a 9-0 run to push the lead to 52-35 on a jumper by Capuano at the 6:07 mark. Another 7-0 run from the Hounds made the advantage 61-37 after Brogan's jump shot with 3:40 to go in the period, and two late free throws from Capuano had Moravian up 67-45 going to the fourth quarter.
The Blue and Grey would push the edge to 30 points, 79-49, with 5:16 to play before the teams combined for just seven points over the final 4:36 of the contest.
Moravian is scheduled to begin a three-game home stand on Wednesday, February 6 when the squad hosts nationally-ranked The University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference contest tipping off at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
