TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team had three players score in double figures to lead the Greyhounds to a 66-54 victory at Goucher College in Landmark Conference action Monday afternoon.
The Hounds, who were originally scheduled to make the trip to Towson, Maryland on Saturday, improve to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in Landmark Conference play with the victory.
Junior guard Karlie Brogan led the trio in double digits with a game-high 19 points to go with nine rebounds, three assists and three steals while junior forward Nadine Ewald picked up the 20th double-double of her career and eight of the season by scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to move up five spots to 15th in school history with 562 career rebounds. Ewald also dished out three assists Junior guard Maddie Capuano tossed in 17 points to go with six rebounds and two blocked shots as she moved up to 22nd all-time at Moravian with 1,059 points.
Senior guard/forward Emily Walls and senior guard Tyis Mullen each scored five points with Walls adding six rebounds and three assists and Mullen, who tied her career-high for points, grabbing two boards. Senior forward Ariana Caiati pulled down six rebounds to go with two points while sophomore guard Jennifer McClave added three assists and three rebounds and senior guard/forward Caitlin Flanagan added two boards.
The Blue and Grey connected on 28-of-59 field goal attempts, 4-of-13 three-pointers and 6-of-10 free throws in the victory, and the Hounds also had a 48-26 edge on the boards including 13-7 on the offensive glass.
Ewald opened the scoring with a lay-up and a free throw on the next possession before the Gophers scored four straight points. The teams traded the lead four times with Goucher going ahead by three points twice. Ewald scored on a pair of lay-ups in the final 1:24 of the quarter to give Moravian a 17-15 lead after 10 minutes of action.
The Gophers scored first in the second quarter to tie the contest for the fifth time at 17-17 before a 10-0 run by the Greyhounds gave Moravian the lead for good. Brogan started the run and a lay-up from Walls had the Blue and Grey leading, 27-17, with 5:44 before the intermission. The Hounds would eventually head to the locker room with a 34-27 edge.
Ewald scored the first points of the second half, and Capuano connected on a three-pointer to stretch the advantage to 13 points, 44-31, with 6:03 remaining in the third quarter. Goucher slowly pulled itself back into the game and trailed by just four points, 48-41, with 1:16 remaining in the period. Moravian had a 51-45 edge after 30 minutes of action.
The Gophers cut the deficit back to four points with two early free throws in the fourth quarter before the Hounds went on a 7-0 run capped by a Capuano lay-up for a 58-47 edge with 7:41 left in the contest. The Greyhounds advantage would remain in double digits for all by 23 seconds in the remainder of the contest.
Moravian will be right back on the road with a Landmark Conference road trip to Susquehanna University on Wednesday, January 23 with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. in Selinsgrove.
