For the second straight season, the Moravian College women's soccer team earned a berth into the Landmark Conference Tournament on the final day of the regular season, making the 2011 postseason with a 1-1, double-overtime tie at Susquehanna University Sunday afternoon.
Moravian, which earns its fifth consecutive postseason appearance, entered the match needing a tie to clinch the fourth seed in the 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament and a win to be the third seed. The Greyhounds will travel to top seeded The University of Scranton on Wednesday, November 2nd for a semifinal match at 7:00 p.m.
The Greyhounds nearly jumped out to a lead in the 13th minute when freshman forward Kayla Pagnani, pictured at right, hit the crossbar with Moravian's second shot of the match. Freshman defender Kristen Schall would put two more shots on goal in the first half as the Greyhounds had a 7-1 edge in shots at the intermission but neither team could score.
Schall and Pagnani each had shots on goal early in the second half as Moravian pushed its advantage in shots to 10-1. However, Susquehanna would take a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when senior midfielder Samantha Price scored off of a pass from junior midfielder Kelly Bassett on the Crusader's second shot of the game.
Moravian would get four more shots off including one on goal by junior defender Eileen Black before the Greyhounds tied the match. Schall took a corner kick in the 75th minute, and 33 seconds later, Pagnani found the back of the net for her second goal of the season off of a pass from senior forward Arielle Caldas to tie the match.
Nearly two minutes after the equalizing goal, Greyhounds' junior goalie Tori Korona made her first save of the match to keep the score tied. Moravian would get three more shots off before the end of regulation but none of them found the net.
Three minutes into the first ten-minute overtime session, Pagnani would get a shot on goal that Susquehanna sophomore goalie Rachel Norbuts made the save on while Korona made a save just before the end of the first overtime to send the game into the second ten-minutes of extra-time. The Greyhounds would get off the only two shots in the second overtime but both were blocked.
Moravian, which played its second straight double-overtime contest, finished the match with a 22-5 advantage in shots including 7-3 on goal, and the Greyhounds had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Korona finished with two saves in the contest while Norbuts had six saves for the Crusaders.
