Hounds Drop Landmark Series Opener at Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team dropped a 12-2, seven-inning decision at Wilkes University Friday afternoon in the opening game of a Landmark Conference series. 

How It Happened

  • The Colonels jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning
  • The Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with a run to cut the deficit to 4-1. Senior shortstop Paul Croyle led off with a single, and he raced home from third on an RBI infield single from graduate student third baseman Jack Tone
  • Wilkes countered with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth frame to push the advantage to 7-1, and the Colonels scored five times in the bottom of the fifth for a 12-1 edge
  • Moravian scored a run in the top of the seventh inning as senior center fielder Matt Madigan led off with a double and scored on an RBI ground out by senior designated hitter Cole Cherkas
  • The Landmark Conference has instituted a ten-run rule after seven innings in conference games this season 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had six hits in the contest with Cherkas going 2-for-3 with an RBI
  • Croyle was 2-for-4 with a run while Madigan added a double and a run and Tone had a hit and an RBI
  • Graduate student Noah Ingalls made the start on the mound, and he allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and two walks to go with a strikeout in 3.2 innings of action. Graduate student Ethan Weber pitched a third of an inning with a walk while senior Rony Minier faced six batters and gave up five runs on five hits. Freshman Andrew Benvenuto tossed the final two innings with one hit allowed
