BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad began its 2024 Landmark Conference season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Drew University at Gillespie Field behind a three-hit shutout from senior Aaron Flyte.

How It Happened

  • The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Greyhounds scored the only two runs Flyte would need on the mound. Graduate student third baseman Justin Otero singled with one out, and he raced around the bases on an RBI double from senior left fielder David Olsakowski. After a ground out, Olsakowski scampered home on an RBI single by graduate student designated hitter Paul Hamilton
  • The Hounds added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth frame to seal the victory. Senior center fielder Matt Madigan singled with one out and stole second base before crossing the plate on an RBI single by senior first baseman Cole Cherkas. Later in the inning, junior right fielder Nick Henry drew a bases loaded walk to push Hamilton, who had also walked, across the plate while Cherkas scored the final run of the contest on an RBI sacrifice fly from graduate student second baseman Chris Pow

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had six hits in the contest with Hamilton going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run
  • Olsakowski and Cherkas each had a hit, a run and an RBI with Olsakowski adding the only extra-base hit of the game
  • Madigan and Otero both had one hit and scored a run while Henry and Pow each contributed an RBI
  • Flyte tossed the first complete game of his career, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out four batters
  • Flyte's shutout was the first Moravian in almost exactly two years with the most recent shutout being a four-hit, 4-0 win by Eddie Olsen '22 versus Juniata College on March 20, 2022
