Field Hockey Falls to Scranton in Final Home Match of 2013

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College field hockey team closed out its 2013 home season with a 3-0 loss to The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action at Rocco Calvo Field Wednesday.

The Royals controlled play early but Greyhounds' senior goal Andrea Eck made four saves and junior defender Bryn Tafuri added a defensive save to keep the match scoreless. Moravian had a chance to get the opening goal but junior midfielder Catherine Duffin had her shot stopped on a penalty corner by Moravian in the 13th minute.

Eck had four more saves and sophomore defender Rebecca Eisenstein added a pair of defensive saves to keep the match scoreless until Scranton broke through in the 29th minute as Jessica Gibson corralled Eisenstein's second save and put it into the net. Eck made her final save of the first half with no time on the clock on a penalty corner by Scranton.

"We had some girls step up and play well," stated Head Coach Amy Endler. "Eisenstein had a good game with two great defensive saves. I also thought that Andrea played better than she has been. We just couldn't get the offense going."

Moravian took the first three shots of the second half with Duffin and senior midfielder Chelsea Grotyohann firing the ball on goal. However, the Royals would extend their lead on Scranton's first shot of the second half in the 41st minute.

The Greyhounds fought back and had a pair of shots on goal in the 48th minute by sophomore forward Kelly O'Donnell and junior forward Taylor Holly but Moravian could not get onto the scoreboard. O'Donnell added two more shots in the 65th minute with the second needing a defensive save from the Royals.

Sophomore midfielder Ely Vazquez, who started on defense due to an injury, had a defensive save for the Greyhounds in the 69th minute before Scranton scored its final tally of the game.

The Royals had an 18-10 advantage in shots with Eck making ten saves for the Greyhounds to go with Moravian's four defensive saves. Scranton also had a 15-4 edge in penalty corners.

The Greyhounds will hit the road for the remainder of the 2013 season with four road trips starting at Drew University on Saturday, October 12 in a Landmark Conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m.

"Scranton executed its game plan to a tee, on offense the entire time, and we were on our heels too much," Endler said. "I'm disappointed but we still have conference games left so we're moving ahead to our game with Drew on Saturday."
