Gilbert Gets National Attention in Defensive Saves Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Senior defender Erin Gilbert of the Moravian College field hockey team is ranked prominently in the NCAA Division III statistics release after a three defensive save performance on Saturday at Drew University.

The three defensive save effort – the second highest single-game mark in school history – gave Gilbert six defensive saves this season, which is ranked 19th in the nation along with seven other field hockey players.

"Erin is determined to do anything in her power to stop the ball from going into the cage," head coach Amy Endler said. "Her experience on the backline is invaluable to our team. She is able to communicate to her teammates what needs to be done and leads by example on the field."

A co-captain on the 2013 club, Gilbert has set the perfect example on how to protect the Moravian goal line. Her 10 career defensive saves are tied for second place all-time at Moravian with Jill Brinckman. The model of excellence in this particular statistic is a former backline teammate of Gilbert's – Stephanie Pezzello, who graduated in 2012 with 27 career defensive saves.

With three games remaining in the regular season, Gilbert tied Pezzello's 2009 and 2010 marks of six single-season saves for third place all-time. Brinckman had eight in 2004, and Pezzello set the record with 13 in her senior year of 2012.

Gilbert and the Greyhounds are 8-6 this season with a 1-3 mark in the Landmark Conference. Moravian plays its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at FDU-Florham before traveling to Juniata College on Saturday, Oct. 19 to play the penultimate game of the regular season.
