TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College junior distance runner Greg Jaindl and senior pole vaulter Scott Goodwin have been selected as the Landmark Conference Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Goodwin, who was named the Landmark Conference Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, finished as the runner-up in the pole vault at the Kutztown University Last Chance Qualifier at a height of 4.60 meters (15-1), his top vault of the indoor season this winter.
"Kutztown for whatever reason has always had some magic for our vaulters most notably when Ryan Karnopp set the school record there a few years ago," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann. "Scott has been working on a few things with his runway and sprint mechanics to help with his approach and it started to come together on Friday night. He had some really good attempts at the 15'6" bar as well so it's encouraging to see he's got the potential right now to take a legitimate shot at the bars he'll need for NCAAs."
Jaindl, who earned his third straight Landmark Conference Track Athlete of the Week honor, set his second school record in eight days by winning the mile run at the Keogh Invitational hosted by Haverford College with a time of 4:18.18.
"Greg's main goal was to take a shot at Donnie Noble's school record," Baumann explained. "We were fortunate that a strong unattached athlete showed up to the meet at the last minute and rabbitted both Greg and Devon through extremely quick at 61 and 2:04 respectively through the 400 and 800 marks. It proved to be a little too quick for both of them but Greg managed to hang on for a 67 on his last 400 and get Donnie's school record by 0.03 seconds. Going forward, we're thinking that might be his best shot at NCAAs this winter, especially if it was a slightly more sensible starting pace."
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, February 23 when the squad looks to win its 10th consecutive and 11th overall Landmark Conference title at the 2019 championships at Susquehanna University.
