TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College senior defender Sara Cassel has been named one of the Landmark Conference Women's Soccer Athletes of the Week.

With the cancellation of the traditional Landmark fall season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Landmark Conference will be recognizing an athlete from each member institution in each conference-sponsored fall sports over the next few weeks. Honorees were nominated for recognition by their respective institution based on achievements from the shortened season and career accolades.

Cassel started 41 of 44 matches in her career with the Greyhounds and contributed five goals and an assist including one game-winning goal, which was featured on ESPNs Top 10 Plays of the Day after her 40-plus yard direct kick defeated rival Muhlenberg College 1-0. Cassel was honored as the Landmark Conference Co-Rookie of the Year in 2017, and she made the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll in 2020

"Sara has been an integral part to the success of the program during her time at Moravian," commented Head Coach Jeff Ykoruk. "She was a starter in a back line that broke a conference record for least amount of goals in a season and has been a scoring threat on set pieces throughout her career. Her combination of strength and speed make her a very tough defender to beat. Sara leads by example as one of our captains and manages her time off the field well as a nursing student. Every coach has a player that does not require a lot of attention, isn't necessarily flashy when they play, but the minute you take them off the field, you immediately need to put them back in the game. Sara is that player for us and we all will really miss not having her around in the fall."

Moravian is scheduled to host Susquehanna University for an exhibition match on Sunday, March 28 beginning at 1:00 p.m. on John Makuvek Field.
