LANCASTER, Pa. --- Moravian College freshman running back Chris Negron has been selected as the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week while sophomore kicker/punter David Fiumara and defensive back Anthony Orlando earned helmet stickers for being on the Weekly Honor Roll after their performances in the Greyhounds' 52-42 win over Franklin & Marshall College Saturday.
Negron rushed for a career high 218 yards on 26 attempts, and he found the end zone twice with runs of six yards and four yards. He also had long runs of 48 and 55 yards in the third quarter. Negron is the first Moravian running back to hit the 200-yard mark in a game since Marc Panepinto ran for 213 yards versus Lebanon Valley College on November 5, 2005, and Negron finished the game with 263 all-purpose yards after returning three kickoffs for 45 yards. Negron's 218 yards are the sixth best game in school history, and his all-purpose total is also the sixth highest game total in the Moravian record books.
"Chris has been getting better every week, and he put it all together yesterday," stated head coach Jeff Pukszyn. "He ran through tackles and made great cuts all game. He saw the holes and used his quickness to make the most of his carries."
Fiumara was seven-for-seven on extra-points to tie Brian Reckeinbeil's school record of extra points in the game that Reckenbeil set on September 24, 2005 vs. Juniata College. Fiumara scored a total of 10 points Saturday, adding a 23-yard field goal to give Moravian a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. He also had three kickoffs that averaged 40.3 yards including a pooch kick that the Greyhounds recovered to set up Fiumara's field goal. Fiumara came on to punt four times in the game and averaged 53.0 yards per punt with two inside the 20-yard line as well as a career and school record long of 67 yards that just rolled into the end zone for a touchback. Fiumara's 67-yard punt was a yard longer than Chad Kurtz's previous record of 66 yards on October 15, 1994 versus Susquehanna University. Fiumara's 53.0 yard per punt average also broke the school record.
"Dave came up big yesterday, not only with the distance on his punts, but also doing a good job getting the ball off in the face of a heavy rush," Pukszyn said. "He was also very accurate with the placement of his kickoff, which allowed us to recover the live ball and keep the momentum going."
Orlando led the Moravian defense for the second time in a game this season with 12 tackles including six solo stops and a tackle for loss. He also recovered a fumble in the second quarter and returned it 45 yards for his first collegiate touchdown. Orlando's score was the middle of three touchdowns the Greyhounds scored in the final 2:43 of the second quarter as Moravian headed to the locker room with a 38-14 lead.
"Anthony made plays all over the field yesterday, and was in perfect position to pick up that fumble and score some points for our defense," Pukszyn said. "He played with great intensity and emotion all day."
Moravian will return to action on Saturday, November 2 in a Centennial Conference game versus Gettysburg College at Rocco Calvo Field with kickoff set for a 1:00 p.m.
