Ron Berta ’68 – New Inductee to Hall of Fame

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Ron Berta '68, a former baseball and football player, is being inducted into the Moravian College Athletic Hall of Fame on November 8, 2013 in Johnston Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Ron was a three-year letterwinner on both the football and baseball teams before being drafted and signing a contract with the Kansas City Athletics in 1967 following his junior season.

On the baseball diamond, he led the Greyhounds in hitting as sophomore in 1966 with a .370 average and as a junior with a .375 average. He also led the Middle Atlantic Conference North Division in 1967 with three home runs and 15 RBI while earning All-MAC First Team honors as a catcher.

On the football gridiron, Ron was a two-way player, starting on the line on offense and at linebacker on defense, and he was a team captain in 1966, and would have been a captain again as a senior if he hadn't signed the baseball contract. He was named to the All-MAC Second Team as a sophomore in 1965 before making the First Team in 1966. Ron was also named a Little All-American in 1965, and he was an All-ECAC First Team selection in 1966.

He played two seasons in the Kansas City Athletics organization before beginning a 31-year career with Mack Trucks. Ron also received letters of interest from two teams in the Canadian Football League.

Ron is currently serving as an assistant baseball coach at Dieruff High School as well as coaching with the Allentown Drive middle school program during the summer and the Hellertown Royals of the Blue Mountain League, He resides in Wescosville, Pennsylvania, and Ron and his late wife JoAnn have two daughters, Christie and Debra.
