Women's Soccer Picked 2nd in Landmark Preseason Poll

Women's Soccer Picked 2nd in Landmark Preseason Poll

TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian College women's soccer team has been picked to finish second in the 2013 Landmark Conference Preseason Poll selected by the conference coaches.

Three-time defending champion The University of Scranton was selected to repeat as Landmark champions with 54 points and four first place votes while the Greyhounds had 40 points and one first place vote. Drew University received the other two first place votes and 38 points to finish third while The Catholic University of America was fourth with 33 points.

"Second place makes sense," stated fourth-year Head Coach Brienne Smith. "We finished second last fall, and I am sure most of the coaches are voting based on last fall's results. Obviously, Scranton remains the team to beat. Coach Colleen Murphy does an excellent job with her program, and I am sure this year will be no different.

"Having said that, we feel strongly that we can compete for a championship this fall. Our freshman class has added some talent and depth to our program, and our returning group is looking stronger every day. We are excited about our chances, and we can't wait to get after it," Smith finished

Moravian was 10-9-2 last fall, falling to Scranton 2-0 in the Landmark Championship match and hosting Lebanon Valley College in the ECAC Division III South Quarterfinals last November.

The Greyhounds have 14 letterwinners and ten starters back in camp and a total of 25 players training for the 2013 season.

Moravian opens the campaign at the Wilkes University Colonel Classic, taking on host Wilkes at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, August 30. The Greyhounds first home match of the season on the HUB Quad is slated for Saturday, September 7 when Moravian hosts DeSales University at 12:00 p.m.
