Volleyball Falls to Lycoming and Marymount in Tri-Match

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Moravian College volleyball team dropped two contests at a tri-match with Lycoming College at Marymount University on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds (5-8) fell in straight sets to Lycoming (25-23, 25-21, 25-18) in the first match before succumbing 3-1 to host Marymount (25-21, 25-20, 17-25, 25-15).

Senior setter Kelly Brown became the third player in Moravian College history to join the 3,000-assist club with her efforts Saturday. She finished the day with 3,007 career assists. Brown also moved into a fourth-place tie in the school record books with 1,335 digs.

The long road trip to Virginia showed no ill effects as the Greyhounds opened the first set against Lycoming on a 7-3 run. Lycoming eventually tied the score at 12 apiece, and took an 18-14 lead 12 points later.

A kill from junior outside hitter Taylor Jennings, followed by a service ace from junior outside hitter Kelianne Comitalo tied the score at 23-23, but Lycoming responded with two straight points to win the opening set.

Moravian again played Lycoming tight in the second set, which saw the score tied eight times. At 18-18, Lycoming went on a five-point run en route to a 25-21 final set score.

Brown had 35 assists in the Lycoming match, 10 of which were to freshman middle blocker Taylor Kornmann. The freshman lefty finished the first match on Saturday with a .400 hitting percentage.

Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hostetler finished with eight kills, while sophomore middle blocker Victoria Bobyak had seven. Defensively, freshman libero Kim Groff came up with 10 digs, while Brown had seven.

Lycoming improved to 9-6 with the win over Moravian.

The Greyhounds won their only set of the day against Marymount in the second match. Moravian stormed out to an 8-4 lead with five straight points, including three kills from Kornmann, one from Brown and one by Hostetler.

Hostetler led the team in kills in the Marymount match with 14, while Kornmann notched 11 on a .360 hitting percentage. Brown had 26 assists, while Groff passed up five assists from the backline. Brown led the way defensively against Marymount with 15 digs, just ahead of Groff's 12.

Marymount improved to 7-6 with the victory.

Moravian returns to Johnston Hall on Tuesday for a non-conference match with Penn State University-Berks at 7 p.m. before they head to the York College Spartan Invitational next weekend.
