Moravian Splits First Landmark Matches of 2013

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team split its opening two matches of the 2013 Landmark Conference season Sunday during the first Landmark Conference Round Robin of the year hosted by Susquehanna University.

The Greyhounds began the conference slate by rallying from a two-set deficit to defeat Goucher College, 21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-11. Moravian then fell to the University of Scranton, 27-25, 27-25, 17-25, 25-14. The Greyhounds were originally scheduled to play just once on Sunday but their weekend slate was changed with The United States Merchant Marine Academy, the first match scheduled for Saturday, unable to travel due to the government shutdown.

Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hostetler paced the Greyhounds versus the Gophers with 20 kills to go along with three digs while freshman middle blocker Taylor Kornmann added 14 kills, a block and a service ace. Senior setter Kelly Brown ran the Moravian offense with 41 assists, and she also had four kills and five digs in the match while sophomore defensive specialist Andrea Giardina had a team high two service aces to go with seven digs.

Senior middle blocker Brittany O'Hara had four kills and a block for Moravian against Goucher while junior outside hitter Taylor Jennings added three kills and two digs. Freshman libero Kim Groff paced the squad with 14 digs in the victory.

The Greyhounds forced the first two sets with the Royals to go past regulation scoring with Scranton earning 27-25 wins. Hostetler once again led Moravian with 11 kills to go with ten digs while Kornmann had eight kills and four blocks. Jennings also contributed eight kills and four blocks in the match while Brown added 32 assists, 17 digs and three service aces.

Sophomore middle blocker Victoria Bobyak had seven kills for the Greyhounds while Giardina added a match-high 22 digs. Senior right side hitter Katelynn Strohl had 12 digs and a pair of service aces while freshman middle blocker Jaclyn Smith added three kills and Groff contributed eight digs.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, October 9 when the squad hosts Penn State-Brandywine in a non-conference match in Johnston Hall starting at 7:00 p.m.
