Moravian Splits Matches on Opening Day of Greyhound Premiere

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College Greyhounds split a pair of matches on the opening night of the 13th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Johnston Hall Friday evening. The Greyhounds swept Marywood University in the opener 25-19, 25-10, 26-24 before falling to Dickinson College 25-20, 20-25, 26-24, 25-19 in the final match of the evening.

After falling to an early deficit in the first and third sets to the Pacers, the Hounds were able to rally back and win the match in three straight sets.

Playing well for the Hounds was freshman middle blocker Erin Tiger who registered eight kills and led the team with a .333 hitting percentage in the first match. Also playing well for the team was sophomore outside hitter Mary Zacher who tallied 13 kills and nine digs. Junior middle blocker Taylor Kornmann lead the team with 15 digs, while adding eight kills to the mix. Setting up the attack was senior setter Megan Szkolnicki who totaled 26 assists, four kills and five digs. Serving it up was freshman setter Rebecca Purcell who recorded four aces to help defeat Marywood.

It was a hard fought battle between the Hounds and the Devils but when the dust settle at the end of the four sets Dickinson had won the game 3-1. Leading the Greyhounds was Zacher who racked up a team high 18 kills and also added 12 digs and two service aces. Jaclyn Smith also added eight kills in the teams valiant effort against the Red Devils. Another member of the team who played well in the second match was Szkolnicki who ended the match with 33 assists, four kills and seven digs.

Moravian will play Carroll (Wisc.) University at 10:00 a.m. and Muhlenberg College at 2:00 p.m. in the Gold Bracket final on Saturday, September 5 in Breidegam Fieldhouse.
