Moravian Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney in Virginia

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. --- The Moravian College baseball squad split its season-opening doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College, falling in the first game 2-0 before winning the second contest 11-0 Saturday.

The Greyhounds were limited to three hits in the opening game with junior first baseman Brett Moyer going 2-for-3 with a double. Senior second baseman Ian Csencsits had the Hounds other hit in the contest, another double.

Sophomore Eddie Olsen went the distance on the mound in the first game, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks to go with a pair of strikeouts.

The Blue and Grey collected 16 hits in the second game with Moyer, sophomore second baseman Royce Frazier and sophomore right fielder Robert Roman each going 3-for-4 with two runs. Moyer had a triple and an RBI; Frazier added a double while Roman had one RBI. Freshman shortstop Mason Fisher was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while sophomore third baseman David Bertolotti was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior center fielder Carmine Palummo had a triple in the contest and drove in three runs.

Sophomore Scott Poulson picked up the victory on the mound in the second game, allowing just three hits and three walks to go with a pair of strikeouts in six innings of action. Junior Kyle Serman completed the shutout with two strikeouts and a walk in the final inning.

Moravian gave Poulson all of the offense he needed with a run in the top of the third inning when Frazier led off with a double and eventually raced home on an RBI sacrifice fly by Palummo. The Greyhounds doubled the advantage with a run in the fourth frame when Moyer led off with a single and scored on an RBI single off of Bertolotti's bat.

The Blue and Grey stretched the lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Roman led off with a single and Fisher followed with another single. The duo would race across the plate when freshman catcher Derek Holmes reached on an error.

Moravian finished the scoring with seven runs in the top of the sixth. Bertolotti and Frazier singled before Roman ripped an RBI single to score Bertolotti. Fisher followed with an RBI single to plate Frazier while Palummo ripped a two-RBI double to right field as Fisher and Roman crossed the plate. Csencsits and Moyer hit back-to-back RBI triples before Moyer scored the final run of the contest on an RBI ground out from senior catcher Ian Luberti.

The Greyhounds will close out the three-game series at Hampden-Sydney with a single game on Sunday, February 23 with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
