BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College is continuing its look back at its 2018-19 athletic campaign. The next entry in our second countdown of the summer – the Top 10 Stories of the Year selected by the athletic administration – are the eight stories that received votes but not enough to make the ranking.

Greyhounds Complete over 2,900 Hours of Community Service in 2018-19

Moravian's student-athletes registered 2,915 hours of community service during the 2018-19 academic year. Each academic year, Moravian has a number of community service projects that have become tradition including members of each team heading to both Marvine Elementary School and the Boys & Girls Club of Bethlehem once a week for after school programs. Moravian's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted its seventh annual Special Olympics Basketball Tournament in April involving all 19 teams and also collected funds to purchase Christmas gifts for families through Turning Point. Each team also helped out on a pair of field days for William Penn Elementary School to teach skills.

Moravian Honors 62 Student-Athletes in Second Chi Alpha Sigma Ceremony

The Hounds honored 62 student-athletes on March 29 at the second Chi Alpha Sigma Ceremony to kick off NCAA Division III Week. Chi Alpha Sigma works with NCAA and NAIA member institutions to recognize outstanding college student-athletes for their successes both on the field of competition and in the classroom. To be eligible for Chi Alpha Sigma, student-athletes must be a junior and/or senior with a 3.4 or higher GPA and have earned a varsity letter

New Turf Installed at Rocco Calvo Field

During the summer of 2018, Moravian replaced the turf at Rocco Calvo Field in the Steel Athletic Complex with a new Shaw Sports Turf. The initial Sportexe turf surface was installed during the summer of 2005 and has hosted the football team, men's lacrosse squad, women's lacrosse team and field hockey squad for varsity events over the past 13 years.

Moravian Has 181 Conference Academic Honor Roll Selections

During the three athletics seasons – fall, winter and spring – student-athletes that are sophomore, junior or seniors can earn Conference Academic Honor Roll honors from the Landmark Conference and Centennial Conference (football) if they maintain a 3.2 career GPA (3.4 for football). Moravian had 181 Conference Academic Honor Roll selections during 2018-19.

Football/Baseball Locker Room Project

During the summer of 2018, Moravian undertook a project to renovate the locker room used by the football and baseball teams by installing new lockers, flooring, lighting, air conditioning and a lounge for the student-athletes. It was the first major renovation in the locker room since the building was built in the 1960s.

Moravian Has Six Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athletes

The Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators and sports information directors. Moravian had six senior Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athletes in 2018-19.

Five Hounds Earn Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year Honors

At the conclusion of each season, the coaches in the Landmark Conference vote for the All-Conference Teams and the major award winners of Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year. During 2018-19, the Greyhounds earned five Rookie of the Year accolades.

Redesign of Moraviansports.com

Moravian launched its third design of its website – https://www.moraviansports.com/landing/index – on August 15 after working with PrestoSports on the new project. The new version has added new features with easier access to videos, photo galleries and social media as well as a clean design as Moravian works to make the website compliant with the American with Disabilities Act.

 

The top story in the countdown will be released on Wednesday, July 31.
