Layng, Zack Break School Records at Coach P Open

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Senior Timothy Layng cleared five meters for the first time in school history and senior Gary Zack had the eighth best throw in NCAA Division III history in the javelin to lead the Moravian College men's outdoor track & field team at the non-scoring Coach P Open Saturday.

Layng became the first Moravian student-athlete to clear five meters (16 feet, 3/4 inches) in the pole vault which is also an ECAC qualifying match and moves him into a tie for first place on the 2012 Track & Field Results Reporting System list to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the pole vault. Those men ranked in the top 20 for individuals and top 16 for relays at the end of the season will compete at the national meet.

Zack, who was already first on the TFRRS list, improved his school record to an ECAC qualifying 69.05 meters (226 feet, six inches). That mark moves him to eighth all-time on the NCAA Division III top ten list for the new javelin dating back to 1986. Zack's mark was also a meet record for the Coach P Open.

Moravian had one other individual winner as freshman Dillon Farrell captured the 1,500-meter run in an ECAC qualifying and meet record time of 3:59.71, the sixth fastest time in school history. Senior Matthew Lutcza was ninth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:09.85 while junior Vincent McDowell took seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.44 seconds.

Sophomore Kristopher Joint finished as the runner-up in the triple jump at an ECAC qualifying distance of 13.79 meters (45 feet, three inches), a distance that would be 33rd on the TFRRS list but Joint is already 20th.  Junior Travis King took third in the triple jump with an ECAC qualifying mark of 13.74 meters (45 feet, one inch), good enough for 35th of the TFRRS list, but King is already 19th.

Joint was also tied for seventh in the high jump with junior Jonathan Heberling as the duo cleared 1.81 meters (five feet, 11 1/4 inches). Heberling also finished fourth in the long jump at 6.62 meters (21 feet, 8 3/4 inches) while freshman Jeffrey Gallagher took fifth in the discus at 41.52 meters (136 feet, three inches).

Moravian will return to action when the squad hosts the Greyhound Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21 at Timothy Breidegam Track & Rocco Calvo Field.
