Top 10 Games of 2018-19 - No. 6 - Football wins with 17 seconds left at Susquehanna

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College is continuing its look back at its 2018-19 athletic campaign. The next event in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 6 highlight – the football team scoring with 17 seconds left to post a 21-18 victory at Susquehanna University.

The Greyhounds, who completed the 2018 campaign with a 5-5 overall record, had four games decided by a touchdown or less last fall, going 2-2 in those contests.

On Saturday, October 6, the Hounds traveled to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania for their final game before a bye week. The Hounds opened the scoring just 2:24 into the contest when sophomore linebacker Brady Hornbaker forced and recovered a fumble and then returned it 28 yards for a touchdown. Senior Jon Miller split the uprights with the extra-point for a 7-0 Moravian lead.

The River Hawks scored the game's next nine points to build a 9-7 advantage before junior running back Roberto Diez scored on a five-yard run to put the Blue and Grey back in front, 14-9, after Miller's PAT with 2:24 left in the first half. Susquehanna hit a field goal to close the gap to 14-12 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, the River Hawks moved ahead two minutes into the third quarter when Miller had a 31-yard field goal attempt blocked and returned for a touchdown by Susquehanna. However, the River Hawks missed the two-point conversion, taking an 18-14 lead.

Later in the quarter, Moravian took over at its own 19-yard line with 4:21 to play. Freshman quarterback Christopher Mills would lead the Greyhounds on an 11-play, 81-yard drive that saw him complete 10 passes and run for a yard on the other play of the drive. Mills connected with sophomore wide receiver Nick Petros for three first downs on the possession and one to freshman wide receiver Cory Little before connecting with junior wide receiver Alex Pierce on a seven-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds to play. Miller made the extra-point for a 21-18 advantage.

Susquehanna tried one last deep pass after the kickoff before sophomore defensive back Renard Nicholson made an interception to send the Greyhounds into the bye week at 4-2.
