Moravian Student-Athletes Participate in Read Across America

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Student-athletes from the Moravian College football and women's basketball team headed out to a pair of Bethlehem Area elementary schools to help celebrate Dr. Suess' birthday and Read Across America Friday.

Ten members of the Greyhounds' football squad including juniors Rocco Del Priore, Nick Clingan, Anthony Dolan and Jim Tersigni, sophomores Julian DiGiacomo and Fran Corbett and freshmen Keith Hinds, Brandon Riggin, Kevin Bracken and Josh Gonzalez went to Spring Garden Elementary School Friday morning to read to the kindergartners, first graders and second graders.  The group also spent a few minutes outside with the elementary students.

"Going to Spring Garden Elementary School was uplifting, entertaining, and rewarding," Del Priore stated. "It is always enjoyable going out into the community to represent Moravian athletics. Reading is such a vital part of a child's education and hopefully we influenced the students in a positive way."

Members of the women's basketball team headed to Asa Packer Elementary School Friday afternoon to read books as well. Senior Cassandra Phillips, juniors Alyssa Baranovich and Katie Marakos, sophomore Laura Jordan and freshman Casey Bill took turns reading to different classrooms around the school.

"Spending the day at Asa Packer Elementary for Read Across America was such a fun experience," Phillips explained.  "We read a variety of books to classes from grades K-5. We felt honored when a couple of the fifth grade basketball players asked for our autographs. Since it was in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, my favorite part of the day was reading Cat in the Hat to the kindergarteners. We had a great day and a great start to our spring break."
