Greyhounds Fall to Catholic in Landmark Conference Series Finale

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- The Moravian University baseball team fell to host The Catholic University of America, 14-9, in a back-and-forth game Sunday at the University of Maryland's Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as freshman second baseman Nathan Jones led off with a single and eventually raced home on an RBI groundout by senior center fielder David Olsakowski
  • The Cardinals answered with a run in the bottom of the second to knot the game at 1-1
  • The Blue & Grey pushed three runs across the plate in the top of the third frame to take a 4-1 edge. Sophomore first baseman Wyatt Harrar led off with a double, and freshman third baseman Troy Rabosky drew a walk. Freshman catcher Ronnie Werkheiser reached on an error that allowed Harrar and Rabosky to score while Werkheiser raced home on an RBI single by Jones
  • Catholic countered with four runs in the bottom of the third to move ahead 5-4
  • Moravian tied the contest again at 5-5 with a run in the top of the fourth inning as Olsakowski led off with a single and crossed the plate on an RBI single from Harrar
  • The Hounds took their third lead of the contest with a run in the sixth frame for a 6-5 edge. Harrar drew a lead off walk, and he scored on an RBI double off Werkheriser's bat
  • The Cardinals answered once again in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runs for a 7-6 edge
  • Moravian moved back in front, 8-7, with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth frame. Sophomore right fielder Matt Westcott hit a leadoff single before Rabosky connected on a two-run homer to left center field, his third home run of the season
  • Catholic plated seven runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 14-8 lead
  • The Blue & Grey scored once in the top of the ninth and left the bases loaded as the game ended. Freshman shortstop David Vozzo started the frame with a single, and he raced home on a wild pitch

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 17 hits in the game with all nine starters collecting at least one hit
  • Harrar was 3-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI while Rabosky went 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and a homer
  • Jones had a 3-for-6 game with a run and an RBI while Westcott added two hits and a run
  • Senior catcher Connor Wengryn recorded a pair of hits and a double while Werkhesier had a hit, a run, a double and an RBI
  • Olsakowski also added a hit, a run and an RBI while Vozzo posted a hit and a run and senior designated hitter Nick Henry registered one hit
  • Freshman Cam Elicier made the start on the mound, and he had five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of action. Freshman Tyler Bonelli recorded a strikeout in 2.1 innings of action while freshman EJ Youngling tossed an inning. Sophomore Nate McBride faced three batters while sophomores Wes Griffith and Nick Leonard and senior Chris Medei all pitched two-thirds of an inning with Leonard striking out two batters
