Hounds Drop Doubleheader to Neumann

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Neumann University, 3-2 and 9-6, at Gillespie Field Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Knights scored the opening run of the game in the top of third inning, and Neumann added a run in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fifth to pull within, 2-1. Freshman center fielder Luke Keitsock drew a leadoff walk, and he scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop David Vozzo
  • The Blue & Grey tied the contest at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the eighth as Vozzo walked with one out and raced home on an RBI single from freshman third baseman Troy Rabosky. Moravian led the bases loaded in the inning
  • Neumann pushed a run home in the top of the ninth to retake a 3-2 edge
  • The Hounds put two runners on base with no outs but were unable to tie the game
  • Freshman Cam Elicier started on the mound and had one strikeout in 3.2 innings while freshman Andrew Sagrestano had five strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Senior Matt Snyder suffered his first loss of the season after starting 6-0 as he pitched the final inning and gave up an unearned run

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Moravian scored first in the second game with a run in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 edge. Rabosky was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by graduate student catcher Connor Wengryn
  • The Greyhounds pushed the advantage to 2-0 with a run in the third inning as graduate student left fielder David Olsakowski drew a one-out walk and trotted home on a bases load RBI walk from Rabosky
  • The Knights countered with five runs in the top of the fourth to move ahead, 5-2
  • The Blue & Grey answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the score at 5-5. Graduate student designated hitter Cole Cherkas and Rabosky both walked, and the duo both scored on a two RBI single from senior pinch hitter Nick Henry
  • Neumann moved right back ahead with a run in the top of the sixth for a 6-5 edge
  • The Hounds answered again in the bottom of the inning while Vozzo led off with a solo home run to left field, his second homer of the season
  • The squads were still tied at 6-6 after the scheduled seven innings of the second game
  • The Knights scored three times in the top of the ninth for a 9-6 lead
  • Moravian loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to score
  • The Greyhounds used seven pitchers in the game with freshman Jack Steinel starting and striking out one batter in 3.2 innings. Graduate student Aaron Flyte tossed a third of an inning while freshman Tyler Bonelli and sophomore Andrew Benvenuto both pitched one inning. Freshman EJ Youngling faced two batters while Snyder had three strikeouts in 2.2 innings, taking his second loss of the day. Sophomore Nick Leonard earned a strikeout for the final out of the contest

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian collected 13 hits in the doubleheader with Henry going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run
  • Rabosky recorded a 2-for-4 day with two runs and two RBIs while Olsakowski was 2-for-6 with a run
  • Vozzo went 2-for-6 with two runs, two RBIs and a homer while Keitsock had two hits, a run and an RBI
  • Cherkas added a hit, a double and a run while sophomore right fielder Matt Westcott had one hit and Wengryn posted a hit and an RBI
