BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse squad dropped its 2025 home opener, falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 13-6, in non-conference action Saturday morning on John Makuvek Field.
How It Happened
- The Mariners opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, and USMMA led 2-0 after 15 minutes of action
- Merchant Marine added the first goal of the second quarter for a 3-0 lead. The Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard on a goal from senior midfielder Steven Salica at the 8:12 mark. Senior midfielder Dan Kelly netted a goal before senior midfielder Aaron Judge tallied a man-up goal to knot the score at 3-3 with 3:21 left in the period. However, USMMA added a pair of goals to take a 5-3 edge into the intermission
- The Mariners scored the only three goals of the third quarter to lead 8-3 after 45 minutes of play
- Sophomore midfielder Hunter Klapmuts netted a goal to start the fourth quarter to make it 8-4 just over a minute into the period. USMMA scored five times to push the advantage to 13-4 with 7:14 left in the game. Judge scored twice in the final 3:12 to finish of the scoring
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had six players register a point with Judge netting three goals
- Salica, Kelly and Klapmuts each scored one goal with Kelly adding a pair of caused turnovers while graduate student attack Trevor Dzama and sophomore attack Nick Coffaro both contributed one assist
- Senior short stick defensive midfielder Kyle Weiss led the Blue & Grey with four ground balls while senior face-off specialist Gannon Mesko scooped up three ground balls and was 7-for-20 on face-offs to break the school career record with 486 career face-off wins
- Sophomore long stick midfielder Andrew Cassese and senior midfielder Nick Sullivan both had three ground balls while senior defender Jason Levy recorded three caused turnovers and junior defender Mike Sickler had two caused turnovers and two ground balls
- Sophomore goalie Liam Kelly registered seven saves in 50 minutes of action while sophomore goalie Nick Crames made one save in ten minutes of play
- The Hounds went 24-for-24 on clearing attempts and scored on their only extra-man opportunity
