BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2023-24 athletic campaign. Before announcing the top story in the Top 10 Stories from the past year, here is a look at the seven stories that received votes from the Moravian athletic administrators but missed out on making the Top 10.

 

Jeff Long Selected for AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute
Head Football Coach Jeff Long was selected for the 2024 American Football Coaches Association 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute. The AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute is a prestigious program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession. Selected participants are invited to attend the one-day institute that features a curriculum of interactive lectures focused on topics specifically tailored to emphasize leadership in the coaching profession, ethics, influential responsibilities, career progression, and family balance.

Women's Tennis Advances to Landmark Conference Championship Match for Fifth Straight Tournament
The Greyhounds' women's tennis program reached the Landmark Conference Tournament Championship match for the fifth straight tournament dating back to 2019. Director of Tennis Mariana Freitas guided the Hounds to a 15-5 mark with a 7-2 slate in the Landmark Conference regular season to earn the second seed and first round bye in the tournament. Moravian topped The University of Scranton, 5-1, in the Semifinals before falling at Drew University, 5-1, in the Championship contest. It was the third straight year that the Greyhounds and Rangers played for the title while Moravian won in 2019 and 2021 versus Scranton in the final match.

 

Greyhounds Host Annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Award Banquet
Moravian honored its 2023-24 student-athletes with its Second Annual All-Athlete Awards Banquet in Johnston Hall on April 22 sponsored by the Greyhounds' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Greyhounds handed out their annual Senior Awards as softball standout Madi Cunningham was selected as the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete while men's lacrosse player Connor James was honored with the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete. The Blue & Grey Scholar Athlete awards were presented to field hockey student-athlete Bekkah Kehoe, who has a 4.00 GPA and is majoring in special education and early childhood education with a minor in French, and men's soccer player Vito Leone, who maintains a 3.81 GPA and is majoring in computer science and economics.

Raunak Doshi Named Recipient of American Volleyball Coaches Association Diversity Award
Assistant Women's Volleyball Coach Raunak Doshi was one of 20 recipients of the American Volleyball Coaches Association's 2023 Diversity Award. The AVCA Diversity Development Team, which originated in 2015, brought the 20 honorees to the 2023 AVCA Convention in Tampa, Florida from December 13-17. During this year's event, recipients participated in a series of educational seminars—many of which focus on professional and personal development for coaches—and took part in additional relationship-building experiences during the Convention.

Men's Basketball Plays at Historic Palestra
As part of the second Landmark Conference Day at the historic Palestra in Philadelphia, the Moravian men's basketball squad faced off against the University of Scranton on Sunday, January 14 in the fourth and final game of the day. The Hounds earned a 76-56 victory over the Royals.

Men's Tennis Sets Program Record for Victories with 17
For the second straight season, the men's tennis program set a new school record for victories in a year as the squad finished 17-5 under the guidance of Director of Tennis Mariana Freitas. The Hounds started the fall portion of the year at 1-2 before running off 13 consecutive victories. Moravian qualified for the 2024 Landmark Conference Tournament, and defeated Wilkes University in the first round before falling to Drew University in the Semifinals.

 

Women's Golf Competes in Inaugural Season
The Greyhounds debuted the women's golf program in 2023-24 as Moravian's 23rd varsity sport. The Hounds competed for the first time at the Elizabethtown College Fall Blue Jay Invitational on September 12, and the squad participated in ten events throughout the year. Freshman Heidi Wegscheider finished 14th at the 2024 Landmark Conference Championships to earn Landmark All-Conference Honorable Mention honors after the 36-hole tournament.
