BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing its look back at its 2023-24 athletic campaign. The next entry in our second countdown of the summer – the Top 10 Stories of the Year selected by the athletic administration – is our No. 5 highlight – the Greyhounds setting five Landmark Conference records during the 2024 spring season.
Moravian's track & field teams set four of the Landmark records while one came from the softball program.
On April 13, 2024 at the DeSales University Tri-Meet, graduate student Tim King broke the Landmark Conference and Moravian record in the discus with a toss of 46.65 meters (153-0).
Also on April 13, sophomore Tara Smurla posted a Landmark and Moravian record time of 36:08.51 in the 10,000-meter run at the Bucknell University Bison Outdoor Classic.
A month later on May 13 the Hounds' 4x100-meter relay team of juniors Trevor Gray and Owen Sebastro, sophomore Jacob Fenstermaker and freshman Javon McKay recorded a time of 41.26 seconds at the Widener University Final Qualifier. It was the second time during the season that the quartet broke the school and conference record.
At the same meet, senior Lexi Groff set a new Landmark and Moravian record in the high jump as she cleared 1.68 meters (5-6). Groff also cleared the height at the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships on May 24 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
On April 25 sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman launched her 13th home run of the season in the opening game of a split at Franklin & Marshall College to set a new single season record for home runs for the Hounds and Landmark Conference. Silberman added two more homers later in the year to finish the spring with 15 home runs.
The number four story in the countdown will be released on Monday, July 22.
